Rhode Island defeated Duquesne 15-8 in an Atlantic 10 women’s lacrosse game on March 28.
The win marks Rhode Island’s second conference victory of the season. The Rams improved their record to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Duquesne fell to 1-9 overall and remains winless in conference play.
Caitlin Dellecave led Rhode Island with four goals and one assist, totaling five points. Celie Shield contributed three goals and an assist for four points. MJ Timpanaro helped the team gain possession with a team-high nine draw controls, contributing to the Rams’ advantage of 15-10 in that category. Goalkeeper Casey Phelps made eight saves during the match.
The game saw Rhode Island build an early lead with a pair of six-to-one runs. Dellecave scored twice in the first quarter as the Rams went up by five goals before Duquesne rallied with four unanswered scores in the second quarter to make it a one-goal game at halftime. After Duquesne tied it early in the third quarter, Timpanaro’s goal put Rhode Island back ahead, and Cumins opened a decisive fourth-quarter run that extended URI’s lead.
Emma Raines recorded three goals for Duquesne but was unable to close the gap as Rhode Island finished on a three-goal run to secure victory.
Rhode Island is scheduled to play its next game against Davidson on Saturday, April 4 at noon at the URI Soccer Complex.
