Rhode Island finished fifth out of 12 teams at the Wildcat Spring Invitational on April 7, after shooting a combined 24-over par during the final round in Galloway Township, New Jersey.
The tournament saw Villanova secure the team title by two strokes over Georgetown. The Wildcats ended with a plus-30 score for the event, while Seton Hall finished third at plus-32. Navy and Rhode Island rounded out the top five, with scores of plus-44 and plus-50 respectively.
Rhode Island’s lineup struggled throughout the last day, accumulating 30 bogeys, three double bogeys, one triple bogey and a quadruple bogey as a team. Despite these challenges, the Rams managed eight birdies and one eagle during their rounds.
“We played our worst golf of the year,” Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. “We had more double bogies than we’ve had in years. Teams that we have beaten by significant margins this year beat us handily.
“It always comes down to this; the toughest players play their best late in the round, late in the tournament, and late in the season. We need to decide if we’re the team we fielded this fall or the team that has played this spring,” Burke said.
The Rams will have another opportunity to compete before heading into postseason play when they participate in Penn State’s Rutherford Intercollegiate from April 18 to April 19.
