The Rhode Island Rams softball team overcame an early four-run deficit to defeat in-state rival Bryant University 10-8 on April 8. The victory was marked by a triple play and key offensive performances, allowing the Rams to improve their season record to 11-18.
The game was significant as both teams are local rivals, with Bryant entering the contest at 13-17. The Bulldogs took an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning, but Rhode Island responded quickly with two runs of its own. Despite falling behind again after a three-run home run from Carly Genzer of Bryant, the Rams kept pace and gradually closed the gap.
A turning point came when Rhode Island executed a rare triple play, one of only six in Division I softball this season. Energized by this defensive feat, the Rams’ offense surged. Riley Frickleton scored three times over four innings while Kylie Bulinski reached base five times, including hitting her fourth home run of the year and driving in four runs. Bulinski’s performance brought her career total to 75 runs batted in, placing her eleventh all-time for URI.
Other notable contributions included Sydney Orndorff’s triple and two runs batted in, as well as Becca Zawistowski’s RBI double and two walks. Brooke Gerry pitched two scoreless innings late in the game to secure her second win of the season.
Looking ahead, Rhode Island will continue its homestand with a three-game series against Loyola Chicago this weekend. The Sunday matchup will be available for viewing on ESPN+.
