The Rhode Island Rams softball team ended a five-game losing streak by splitting a doubleheader against Saint Louis on March 28. After being shut out in the first game, the Rams rallied in extra innings to secure a win in the second matchup.
This result was significant for Rhode Island (6-14, 2-6 Atlantic 10), as it not only broke their recent losing run but also improved their record in extra-inning games to three wins and one loss. The host Saint Louis Billikens now stand at 14-17 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
In Game One, Saint Louis scored all four of its runs during the fourth inning and held Rhode Island scoreless for a final score of 4-0. Rhody starter Brooke Gerry did not allow any hits through three innings, but five hits from the Billikens in the fourth proved decisive. Anna Christ pitched a complete-game shutout for Saint Louis, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
Game Two saw Rhode Island come from behind to win 6-4 after eight innings. Becca Zawistowski hit a solo home run to start a three-run rally in the eighth inning that gave URI control of the game. Avery Vale-Cruz earned her fourth complete-game victory of the season by pitching out of trouble in the bottom half of that frame. Other notable performances included Sydney Orndorff’s four singles across both games—three coming in Game Two—and Julianne Torres’s RBI double that helped tie up Game Two earlier on.
The series between Rhode Island and Saint Louis will conclude with another game scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
