Rhode Island secured a 4-0 victory over Saint Joseph’s in a women’s tennis match played in Philadelphia on March 28. The match, which was originally scheduled to be held outdoors at 10 a.m., was delayed by seven hours and moved indoors due to scheduling changes. As a result of the late start, singles matches were played first instead of the usual doubles format.
The Rams improved their record to 9-6 overall and began Atlantic 10 conference play with this win. Rhode Island claimed victories in the top three singles positions as well as at No. 5 singles, with all four wins coming in straight sets.
Nikki Fernando defeated Wiktoria Czerny at No.1 singles with scores of 6-3, 6-2. Grace Darcy won her match against Valeria Casusol at No.2 singles, finishing with scores of 6-4, 6-1. Sophie Herrman took the No.3 singles match over Elena Fleming by scores of 6-2, 6-3.
Anastasia Pettersson clinched the team win for Rhode Island by beating June Tronhus at No.5 singles with scores of 6-4, 6-4. Matches at No.4 and No.6 singles were not completed when play was halted due to Rhode Island having already secured victory; there was no doubles competition during this event.
“The team was locked in today from start to finish,” Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said after the match. “We are excited to compete about a great Drexel team tomorrow.” The Rams will remain in Philadelphia for their next matchup against Drexel.
