Rhode Island’s women’s tennis team secured a 7-0 victory over Providence College on Sunday in Newport, Rhode Island. This win marks the Rams’ fourth consecutive match win and improves their season record to 4-1.
The Rams won all three doubles matches, with each pairing conceding no more than three games. In singles play, every Rhode Island player won in straight sets, with none dropping more than three games per set.
Nikki Fernando, Sophie Herrman, Anastasia Pettersson, and Kajsa Helgesen each recorded wins in both singles and doubles. Ava Grnja paired with Herrman for a win at No. 3 doubles. Miruna Scarlat and Stephanie Hylton added victories in the singles lineup.
“Overall, it was a good weekend for the team,” Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. “I was excited to see us play better doubles with each match. We need to rest up and prepare for a strong NJIT team next Sunday.”
With her doubles win alongside Helgesen at No. 1, Fernando tied Grace Hedstrom (2005-09) for third place in program history with 59 career doubles victories. She now trails only Tristany Leikem (64 from 2008-12) and Amanda Barletta (61 from 2007-10).
Rhode Island will try to extend its winning streak when it hosts NJIT on Sunday, February 15 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport.
