David Bidwell, a professor of marine affairs at the University of Rhode Island, will present research findings on offshore wind community discussions during a public event scheduled for May 6 at the New Bedford Free Public Library.
The presentation is intended to inform local residents about prior research and community conversations related to offshore wind energy development. The session, hosted by the Old Bedford Village Community Development Corp., will also provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss their priorities and concerns regarding ongoing industry activities.
Bidwell’s research focuses on how communities interact with renewable energy technologies such as offshore wind. He began conducting studies in New Bedford in 2024. The upcoming one-hour event will share results from interviews, surveys, and workshops held last year not only in New Bedford but also in New London, Connecticut, and Turner Station, Maryland—each recognized as hubs for offshore wind activity. Boston University and the University of Delaware assisted with the study.
“Many promises and warnings have been made about how this development will affect communities,” said Bidwell. “Our study sought to document the hopes and worries of community members, with the goal of raising awareness and accountability of this new industry.”
The event will cover an overview of offshore wind development in the Northeast United States, highlight New Bedford’s role within the sector, summarize key findings from recent studies, and allow time for questions from attendees. Buddy Andrade, director of Old Bedford Village Community Development Corp., said: “This presentation is a chance for us to give feedback on the study results. It’s important that everyone in the community is heard.”
Registration information can be found on the library’s website or by contacting David Bidwell directly.
